Writing off Pope Nicholas as a bumbling and hated individual does not do justice to his education and the way that he governed the Roman See and handled problems in the Western Church.

And writing off The Early Papacy as sentimental trash because you don't agree with Fortescue's position is condescending and suggests to me that you are ignoring the author's research.Mirai Kuriyamahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17174962279656191952noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3348523519788188753.post-12981897535392343632015-01-25T13:49:40.144-06:002015-01-25T13:49:40.144-06:00We've shot ourselves in the foot here in the w...We've shot ourselves in the foot here in the west, that is, it was papal fiat that destroyed the liturgy and it seems it'll require papal fiat again, even if it means herding cats in a council, to restore it again.A. Hunwicke is playing in a similar sandbox this weekend as well. Quote: "A Vatican III could represent a recrudescence of the horrible heresy denounced by Cardinal Ratzinger: that the pope really can do anything especially if he is acting on the mandate of an ecumenical council."

There's one concern I have about fixing the imbalance that now exists between Pope and bishops: most of the latter are irreformable liberals. Given their proper measure of freedom, restoring traditional liturgy (or anything else) is about the last thing they'd do. Some larger restoration must take place first, before this problem is addressed, I fear.Athelstanehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07346012062816580296noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3348523519788188753.post-11556648090249719872015-01-25T03:41:42.411-06:002015-01-25T03:41:42.411-06:00By the way, while I still have a copy of The Early...By the way, while I still have a copy of The Early Papacy (edited by Aldqueen Reid) by Fortescue, I haven't read it since I first bought it (years ago) and now consider it to be a blot on Fortescue's otherwise distinguished academic career. It just reads like sentimental trash.Patrick Sheridanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07995907911415177074noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3348523519788188753.post-63511167343270079512015-01-25T03:38:45.925-06:002015-01-25T03:38:45.925-06:00That is a lucid, well-thought-out comment alienus....That is a lucid, well-thought-out comment alienus. I have read Hull and, in (what I now consider to have been) my liberal darkness, Fortescue, but they all fall into the same trap. These days I read Littledale and Abbe Guettee on the Papacy.

St Photius was a humane, intelligent and thoughtful theologian who could run rings around pope Nicholas, who was clearly despised by the Western bishops.Patrick Sheridanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07995907911415177074noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3348523519788188753.post-3011674354668118782015-01-24T12:00:33.673-06:002015-01-24T12:00:33.673-06:00I get the feeling that the only things people here...I get the feeling that the only things people here have read on the matter are limited to Hull and Fortescue. I mean, that Hergenroether quote is lifted right out of Hull's book. Many of you are as selective and anachronistic in your reading of history and theology as those who endorse the 62 missal as "traditional." You call Photios an imposter; have you read Dvornik on the matter? If you want the rights of bishops, again, read the codices of canon law. Even there you'll see that a semi-ultramontanist sentiment won the day; of course, the simple fact that the Eastern Code was promulgated by John Paul II pretty much proves that. Maybe I should just go start my own blog.A. T. Some kind of balance needs to be found between insisting the pope dabble in every little problem and insisting he keep his grubby Roman fingers to himself. It would be nice for a council to address this problem, but I don't see one solving it in any definitive way. The globalization of media has made it far too easy for the pope to get involved with problems that the local ordinary could more easily handle.

I've often daydreamed about how the Church would operate with more patriarchates, especially in the West. It might go horribly wrong, but the thought of a Patriarch of the Americas is fascinating.J.https://www.blogger.com/profile/02124903563459448051noreply@blogger.com
