I am not sure what a "later time"...Louis,

I am not sure what a "later time" is in this case. The Holy Week rites certainly developed around the 8th/9th century in the Greek and Latin world in imitation of the older practices of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher (cf. Egeria's pilgrimage). The unique aspects of Holy Week may be comparatively new by a few centuries, but the idea of a Presanctified Mass is certainly among the most ancient rites of the Church to be received virtually unchanged. Attributed to Gregory the Great, it probably dates from some time a bit before then and is attested to as a Lenten norm in the Synod at Trullo. The Lenten daily Masses of the Roman rite even have occasional references to these services before they evolved into proper Masses.

As to your second point, that is a fair hypothesis. The Rad Tradhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00899289024837953345noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3348523519788188753.post-61695737413942532192019-04-19T22:44:49.390-05:002019-04-19T22:44:49.390-05:00I would like to offer 2 clarifications here:

So it is not one of the oldest rites in the Roman Church, though certainly some more ancient Roman practices are preserved (as with most penitential services in the Latin Church).

2. The picture of Pope John XXIII is not evidence of the pre55 rite being used. It is merely showing him using a pillow during the Veneration of the Cross, which could have been retained for the papal rite version of the Holy Week Reform. I have yet to see any documentary evidence that pre55 was used by Pope John XXIII, e.g., from L'Osservatore Romano, Worship magainze, etc., as certainly commentary would have been made on this matter, particularly by liturgists.Louis Tofarihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11165744343879155474noreply@blogger.com
