Our old friend, Mister Maestro, has an interesting pair of articles on the ritual symbolism of the old vesperal Mass of Holy Saturday. So much is made of the textual changes, but what of the actions?
LAst night was our 2nd Pian Paschal Vigil. When we reached the renewal of our baptismal vows, I had a strange feeling: it seemed very Novus Ordo-ey, in the sense that it seemed pedantic/didactic (which is what I initially made me dislike most NO celebrations I went to).
A friend, whose parish did the pre-Pian vigil for the first time this year, said it was actually 15 minutes shorter than the 1955 rites because there are no ceremonial quirks (collapsible tables etc.)!
The blessing of the water apart from the font makes no liturgical sense, IMO. Also, why put the incense on the Paschal Candle before the Exultet? The place where it used to be inserted in the Exultet speaks of the evening sacrifice - which, if memory serves me, the psalms pair with incense.
